Intermediate Algebra

This a discovery based learning class in Intermediate Algebra. The student works in a social context to construct math ideas. Each section is comprised of several activities students will work in groups to complete. Class discussions follow activities.

V. TEXT:
Mathematics in Action: Algebraic, Graphic, and Trigonometric Problem Solving. A Custom Edition for Scottsdale Community College. The Consortium for Foundation Mathematics.
VI. REQUIRED CALCULATOR:
It is strongly recommended you purchase the Texas Instruments TI-83 graphing calculator. The text has many applications using the graphing feature of the calculator and it will be used for homework and exams. Loaner calculators are available at student services.
VII. COURSE GRADING:
Ranges: A: 100 - 90 B: 89 - 80 C: 79 - 65 D: 64 - 55 F: below 55
50% of grade: 5 quizzes worth 10% each
25% of grade: In-class exercises, homework and attendance
25% of grade: Final Exam (comprehensive)
VIII. ATTENDANCE & WITHDRAWAL:
Regular attendance is essential. You may be withdrawn if you have more than two absences. If you are sick or unable to attend class you should let me know. Make sure that you withdraw by the following dates if that becomes necessary:

· Exchange phone numbers with two classmates in order to keep current.
· Ask questions when they don?t understand
· Maintain knowledge of their grade status
· Contact instructor right away about concerns or situations that interfere with their success in class
