April 22nd 2008 EARTH DAY at SCC!

PROGRAMM

 

·         7am: Movies start at Student Center Lounge (SC 179):

        Short 20 min Movies will start and continue to revolve through 4pm

        ?The Lorax?, ?Environmental Issues & Human Impact?, ?The Story of Stuff?.

        The movies will educate the viewer on current Environmental and Social Justice 

         Issues.

 

·         8am: Dumpster Dive, East Patio of the Student Center

        This activity will show us how much our college is doing towards recycling, and will

        give us an idea how much of recyclables are still going to the waste bin. Please

        inform your students about this event. We will need many volunteers. Refreshments

        will be available. Faculty: Attached you will find a document on how to get your

        students involved in this event. Your cooperation is highly appreciated. Students will

        have to sign up at the provided sheet to earn extra credit.

 

 

·         9am: The First Tree Planting Session for the ?Adopt A Tree? project begins

               (Session ends at noon)

        We will have a stand available for you that day where you can make a donation in

        the amount of $25 to plant a tree at SCC. You do not have to plant the tree yourself,

        but it is highly recommended that you do. Gloves, shovels and directions to the tree

        planting site will be provided. Wear old clothing!

 

·         10am: Vendors will set up for display, East Patio of Student Center

         Vendors such as CNUW, ASU, UofA, NAU, AKA-Green and others will set up their

         information tables and will have activities available for display. Visitors get educated

         on Water conservation and on how to pursue ?green-colar? jobs. Vendors will have

         their tables set up until 2pm.

 

·         2pm: Second session for the ?Adopt A Tree? project begins (Session ends at 5pm)

         People that are interested in participating in this project, but were not able to make

         it in the morning, will have the opportunity to contribute during this later session.

         Look for the ?Tree planting? stand on the East Patio of the Student Center for more

         information, gloves and shovels.

 

 

·         4:45pm: The winners of the RECYCREATION art competition will be presented,

                   Turquoise Room

         The entries of the Recycreation Art Project will be displayed and the winners of the

         competition announced. The winners will be presented with a $250 scholarship.

 

·         5pm: The movie ?The 11th Hour? starts in Turquoise Room.

        Narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio, this captivating documentary explores the perilous

        state of our planet, and the means by which we can change our course. ontributing

        to this crucial film are noted politicians, scientists and other ambassadors for the

        importance of a universal ecological consciousness.(Duration approx. 95min)

 

·         All Day: Display in the Student Center Foyer:

          The Poster series ?Earth Under Stress? will display the most pressing

          environmental issues that we are facing and what contributes to their causes. In

          addition, sustainability related books are displayed in the Display Case of the

          Sustainability Committee. Visitors will also be informed about the currents

          sustainability efforts of Scottsdale Community College.

Focus the Nation - Global warming solutions for America

Wednesday, January 30th, 10am - 2pm

Student Center: Turquoise Room (SC 164)

This event, organized by the Sustainability Committee of SCC,  focused on the human impact on our environment. Free give aways such as canvas bags and light bulbs were offered. CNUW entertained with their "Recycling Game". The Library displayed books focusing on sustainability. Furthermore the movie "The Lorax" showed and posters were educating visitors on the human impact on nature.

"Get Rid of Your Baggage"

Tuesday, December 4th from 11:00am to 1:30pm.

Corner of Student Center & Library Building

The event was focusing to reduce the use of plastic and paper bags in our daily lifes. More than 160 people joined us and signed our pledge to use canvas bags for their grocery shopping. They also got educated about how much better it is to use canvas bags. Visitors enjoyed free giveaways such as the canvas bags, energy efficient light bulbs (that were donated by SRP's "Energy Wise Program") and recycled denim pens. All of these were given out to make it easier for people to start their "green" lifestyle.  Tammi Taylor Bryant, the MCC Recycling Coordinator, was present to show her support and also to inform people that MCC is doing great things in this respect as well.

 "GREEN CONNECTION"

Wednesday, November 28th at 6:30pm

Student Center (Turquoise Room)

Mick Dalrymple, co-founder of AKA-Green, and Douglas Sydnor founder of Douglas Sydnor Architect & Associates, Inc. will discuss topics such as: Economics of green building, solar design, design strategies, acoustics, material selection, energy savings, water conservation and sustainability in general.

This event was presented by the Psi Gamma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Scottsdale Community College.

SCC - RECYCLING-KICK-OFF Event

The purpose of this event was to make students, faculty and staff aware about the importance of recycling and environmental sensitivity.

It featured multiple Vendors such as AKA-Green and Water Connections, who were educating about how to live in harmony with our environment.

Our CNUW (Center for Nature and Urban Wildlife) was present as well, and helped us understand what effects the thoughtless treatment of nature can have on our beautiful desert landscape and the environment in general.

You can also learn where and what you can recycle at SCC, as well as how you can get more involved in SCC's GREEN activities.

This event also offered FUN GAMES,

GIVEAWAYS, for example these PENS made out of recycled DENIM.
