APPLYING FOR FINANCIAL AID

The information in this section explains how to apply for financial aid at Scottsdale Community College. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) covers the school year which includes Fall, Spring, and both Summer Sessions. Students must reapply for each aid year as soon, after January 1st, as possible.

PRIORITY DEADLINES

The priority deadline is June 1st prior to the start of the Fall semester in August [November 1st prior to the start of the Spring Semester in January]. The priority deadline for Summer is May 1st prior to the start of both Summer I and II Sessions in June. Applications received after these dates will still be considered for aid, but the student may not actually receive funds until after the start of the semester. Students who file after these dates should be prepared to use their own funds to pay for their tuition and fees prior to the payment deadline. Students may also check with the Cashier Office regarding payment plans.

APPLYING FOR ADMISSIONS

New and returning students MUST apply for admissions to the college by completing the admissions application. Be sure to indicate your "Degree or Certificate Type". Continuing students do not have to re-apply for admissions. Admissions and Application Process

Our office must have your correct, complete information before the end of the semester for the school year in which you apply for financial aid. Once we receive your financial aid data from the Department of Education (DOE) federal processor and after all required forms have been submitted, we will begin reviewing your application. As a general rule, allow 30 days for processing depending on the time of the year. During the busier times, it may take longer. When you apply close to the beginning of the semester more time is needed for processing your financial aid.

NOTIFICATION OF FEDERAL AID

Once we've completed the review of your application and you have been awarded financial aid, you will be mailed an Award Notification Letter. Please be sure to read it carefully. If you are ineligible for financial aid you will receive a Denial Letter. Your Financial Aid Award Notification Letter will list the financial aid that has been awarded to you and any future action that needs to be taken to ensure your financial aid is disbursed. If you requested a loan on the FAFSA, instructions on completing the loan process will be included with your Award Notification Letter.  The type of financial aid awarded to you depends on your level of need, your level of enrollment and when you completed your application.

REGISTER FOR CLASSES

All students must be registered for classes prior to release of any financial aid funds. Financial aid is based each semester on the number of credits for which you register. The "MINIMUM REQUIRED CREDITS" is listed on the Financial Aid Award Notification Letter. Full time requires 12 or more credits per semester, three-quarter time is 9-11.99 credits, half-time is 6-8.99 credits, and less than half-time is 1-5.99 credits. Register for Classes Now

DISBURSEMENT OF AID

All aid disbursements are handled through the Cashier's Office. Funds, where appropriate, will be applied directly to your tuition/fees and other college charges. If your financial aid is not sufficient to cover your tuition and fees, you must pay the difference. Payment plans may be available to students who do not have sufficient aid, to cover all charges by the due date. Please check with the  Cashier's Office, (480) 423-6148. All remaining tuition and fees for the semester must be paid by the appropriate tuition and fee payment deadline. You must be registered in ALL credits by the end of the add/drop period each semester.

If you still have financial aid remaining after tuition and fee charges are paid, the balance will be provided in the form of a check and mailed directly to you. The Cashiers Office begins mailing financial aid checks approximately one week prior to the start of each semester. You must be enrolled in the minimum required hours as indicated on your award letter in order to receive the financial aid offered. Enrolling in classes with different start dates may delay the disbursement of financial aid monies. All classes must have a start date in the first two weeks of the semester in order for the check to be mailed prior to the start of the term (late starting classes will cause a delay in the disbursement of your financial aid until the start of the late classes). In order to insure that checks are mailed to the correct address, you must update your address information with the Admissions and Records Office. Update your Address now Once the semester begins checks will not be mailed to out of state addresses. Also, mailed checks will not be forwarded by the U.S. Postal Service.

First time SCC loan borrowers are required by the government to complete an entrance counseling session prior to receiving their loan funds. If entrance counseling has not been completed, your loan check may not be held for more than 7 days before the government requires the funds to be returned to the lender. Loans have multiple disbursements, academic year loans for Fall and Spring semester are disbursed in two equal payments at the beginning of each semester. Fall semester only, or Spring semester only loans are disbursed in two equal payments; one at the beginning of the semester, and a second at the mid-point. You must be enrolled in at least 6 credits at SCC to receive loan.

First year, first time SCC borrowers are subject to a Federal 30 Day Delayed Disbursement during their first semester of enrollment. Loan checks for these borrowers will be mailed no sooner than 30 days after the first start date of classes for the semester.

Federal Perkins Loan checks will not be mailed, and may be picked up in the Cashier's Office between 8am and 6pm Monday through Thursday, and between 8am and 3pm on Fridays beginning the first day of classes.

Important Message about Continued Eligibility for Financial Aid
Remember if you receive financial aid, and then do not attend classes, Federal Law may required you to repay the money to the U.S. Government.
