Program Mission
The Interior Design Program at Scottsdale Community College provides a comprehensive educational experience with pathways leading to professional placement in the interiors industry.

SCC campus is strategically located close to the Arizona Design Center, Scottsdale Olde Town (location of many interior design studios) as well as the Scottsdale Airpark (home of manufacturers, distributors and studios of interior designers and architects). The SCC Interior Design Program is committed to preparing our graduates for the NCIDQ (National Council of Interior Design Qualification). (www.ncidq.org) This national test measures minimum standards for the Interior Design industry. Passing the NCIDQ enables you to work and be certified in the 20+ states that have licensing across the country.

The three year SCC Interior Design Program is Foundation of Interior Design Education and Research (FIDER) accredited. The national accreditation is for 60 credit Interior Design plus 31 credit general education. The graduate earns an AAS Interior Design degree plus Professional Certificate upon completion. The curriculum provides the student with an opportunity to attain technical skills for employment and helps to develop the creative artisan in each of us.

The first two years lay the foundation of communication skills: hand drafting and Computer Aided Drafting (CAD), and drawing & rendering. Vocabulary is established in the introduction class, two history classes, fabrics and materials, marketing and business. Theory is applied in the color class, space planning and kitchen & bath classes. The Professional Certificate offers work in interior codes, construction documents used in building systems, lighting, commercial studio along with additional work in rendering and historical decorative arts.

All beginning students and general education questions are handled by the SCC Advisement Center. Transfer or Interior Design-related credits are handled directly by the Interior Design Program; contact Chuck Cooper at 480 423-6436 or charles.cooper@sccmail.maricopa.edu. Once you are in the SCC Interior Design program, meet periodically with Chuck Cooper for on-going advisement.

General education credits transfer as long as they satisfy the Maricopa County Community College District requirements. Student should consult the SCC catalog to insure transferability along with requesting a transcript review from SCC Advisement.

For national NCIDQ certification, after completing education and field experience, a Bachelors Degree is highly recommended for in-coming students with no previous degree.
