Thistledown Velvet Ant

Scientific Name:  Dasymutilla gloriosa

Order:  Hymenoptera
Family:  Mutillidae

Diet:  Adults drink nectar, Larvae is an external parasite of sand wasp larvae.
Vegetation Association:  Semiarid open lands, on the ground, and in low vegetation.  Males can sometimes be found on flowers.
Predators:   They defend themselves by stinging their predators.

Life Stages: Complete metamorphosis, egg, larvae, pupae, adult.

Notes:   Female velvet ants can give a painful sting.
