The Rio Salado Project is a riparian habitat restoration project in the Salt River just south of downtown Phoenix. The project site covers 595 acres, along a 5-mile stretch of the Salt River from 28th Street to 19th Avenue. The types of native vegetation restored to the site include cottonwood-willow galleries, mesquite bosque and wetland marsh vegetation. Over 200 species of birds have been sighted at the restoration site and the list keeps growing. There are walking, biking, and horse trails throughout the project, along with plenty of places to sit and watch the wildlife. Trails can be accessed from Central Ave, 7th Street, 7th Ave or 16th Street. For more information visit http://phoenix.gov/riosalado/.
