Least Bittern
lxobrychus exilis
Residency:  Migrates through state, year-round in South-west corner.
Diet:  Eats small fish, frogs, insects and small mammals.  Sometimes birds eggs and chicks.
Predators:  Snapping Turtles and Red-tailed Hawks take adults.  Snakes, turtles, crows and raptors eat chicks and eggs.
Nesting:  Small platform of sticks and vegetation placed in cattails or bushes 8-14 in. above water.  Eggs are 2-7 per clutch, pale blue or greenish white, 2 broods per year.

Notes:  Very secretive.  Will climb and run through reeds 2-3 ft. above water.
