Iron Cross Blister Beetle

Scientific Name: Tegrodera erosa

Order Coleoptera
Family:  Meloidae

Diet Feeds on brittlebush blossoms.
Vegetation Association:  Found in dry valleys and hills.
Predators:   This beetle?s bright colors warn its predators of its poisonous blood.  The blood contains chemicals that can blister skin, burn mouths, or even kill predators.

Life Stages: Complete metamorphosis, egg, larvae, pupae, adult.

Notes:   Also called yellow-winged blister beetle.  Often occur in large feeding and mating aggregations. During courtship the male and female will face each other, and the male will pull the females antennae over the grooves in his head.
