Giant Desert Centipede

Scientific Name: Scolopendra heros

Order: Scolopendromorpha

Family: Scolopendridae

Diet: Centipedes will feed on anything small enough to catch and consume which is primarily insects but includes other arthropods, lizards, and even small rodents.

Vegetation Association:  Occasionally climbs into velvet mesquite trees.

Predators:   Exhibits head-tail mimicry as a defense mechanism against predation.

Life Stages: Females lay eggs which they protect from mould and predators, this will continue for a few days after the young hatch.

Notes: Centipedes have pincher like structures in front of the legs called gnathopods which are used to subdue and inject venom into their prey.
