Scientific Name: Atriplex canescens ? Native, perennial shrub. ? Browsed by deer and antelope. Seeds provide food for birds and rodents. ? Browsed by livestock. ? Does well in alkaline soils. ? Saltbush takes up salt into small fibers on leaves creating salt deposits; the deposits reflect light. ? Cattle depend on saltbush when grasses are gone. ? American Indians use seeds for meal and shoots for dyes. The Hopi use saltbush for weaving.
