Devil?s Claw

Scientific Name: Proboscidea parvifloradevilsclawJCCC092907

? Native to the Southwest.

? Annual herb that blooms in the summer.

? Wildlife value unknown.

? Cattle will eat the plants and in some places devil?s claw has suffered from overgrazing.

? American Indians have eaten the immature fruit pods as a vegetable. The seeds are also edible. The black fibers from mature pods are used to make baskets.

? The prongs of the dried pods catch onto animals as they pass by, which helps the seeds to disperse over large areas. American Indians domesticated devil?s claw in the 19th century.
