Desert Kingsnake

Scientific Name: Lampropeltis getula splendida

Temporal Activity: Active during cooler hours such as dawn and dusk. In summer they become primarily nocturnal.

Diet: Other snakes, including rattle snakes, lizards, small mammals, birds, and eggs.

Predators: Birds such as owls and hawks, as well as other predators.

Breeding: Occurs in mid summer: five to seventeen eggs are laid which will hatch in late summer or early fall.

Vegetation Association: Found in a variety of habitats.

Notes: There are chemicals in the Kingsnake?s blood that work to counteract rattlesnake venom.
