Scientific Name: Bos taurus
Temporal Activity: Active during the day.
Diet: Grasses, grains and legumes.
Predators: Humans.
Breeding: Mating can occur year-round. Most calves are born in the spring after a 9 month gestation and will nurse for 6 months. Cows are able to mate after 1 year and continue until about 12 for females.
Notes: Cattle are raised as livestock, for meat or dairy products, leather, or for use as draught animals (to pull plows and carts). In countries such as India they are honored and revered. They can live up to 25 years and weigh as much as 4,000 pounds. Cattle farming poses many threats to native species. Cattle have been known to trample various plant species as well as disturb nests of ground nesting birds. They have also been known to eat native vegetation to the point that it adversely affects the biodiversity that would otherwise exist.
