Scientific Name: Libellula lydia Order: Odonata Family: Libelluidae Diet: Eats insects, including mosquitoes. Nymphs eat aquatic invertebrates such as small crayfish, mayfly larvae, and small aquatic vertebrates such as tadpoles and minnows. Vegetation Association: Hawks for insects over ponds, marshes and slow moving bodies of water. Nymphs can be found covered in algae. Predators: Fish, frogs, and other aquatic insects. Life stages: Incomplete metamorphosis; egg, nymph, adult. Notes: Male looks checkered because of its chunky white body and brownish-black bands on the wings.
