Common Green Darner

Scientific Name:  Anax junius
Order:  Odonata
Family:  Aeshnidae
Diet:  Naiads eat aquatic insects; such as mosquito larvae, mayfly larvae and freshwater shrimp.  They also eat small fish and tadpoles.  Adults eat soft-bodied insects including mosquitoes, flies, butterflies, moths, mayflies, and stoneflies.
Vegetation Association:  Found near weedy ponds and lakes at low elevations
Predators:  Fish and birds
Life stages:  Incomplete metamorphosis; egg, nymph, adult
Notes:  One of the biggest and fastest dragonflies.  They can reach speeds of 85 mph.  Flight season is from June to September.  They are able to swim by jet propulsion, squirting water out of their abdomens. This is a very aggressive hunter.  Males will defend their territory along lakes and ponds. Also named ?Darning Needle,? ?Mosquito Hawk? and ?Lord of June.?  This is Washington State?s insect
