Common Gallinule

Scientific Name: Gallinula chloropuscgallinuleCB110906a

Residency: Year-round in southern half of Arizona.

Diet: Eats seeds, grasses, small snails, and insects.

Predators: Red-tailed Hawk, Bald Eagle and Coyote, snakes eat eggs. Nests destroyed by cats.

Nesting: Nest is a platform, made of cattail stems and lined with grasses, 4-6 in. high. Eggs:  4-17 per clutch, olive-buff with dark marks, 2-3 broods per year.

Nesting Records:

Notes: Also called the Common Moorhen. The young from first broods may help with feeding later broods.
