Scientific Name: Phoebis sennae Order: Lepidoptera Family: Pieridae Diet: Larvae feed on various species of senna (Cassia). Adults feed on nectar from plants with tubular flowers such as, cordial, bougainvillea, hibiscus, lantanas, and morning glory. Vegetation Association: Host plants are species of Cassia. This butterfly is also found in open spaces, gardens, seashores, and watercourses. Adults are attracted to mud puddles and flowers. Predators: Life Stages: Complete metamorphosis; egg, larva, pupa, adult. Notes: Young caterpillars feed and shed their skin, or molt. The final molt produces the pupa, and then the butterfly rests. Once free of the chrysalis, fluid from its body is pumped into its wings, the wings then are allowed to dry before it flies away to look for food and a mate. Males are solid yellow and females can be yellow or white. Males fly rapidly and patrol for receptive females non-stop. Photo: To be added.
