Scientific Name: Aythya valisineria

Residency: Winters in eastern Arizona.

Diet: Eats roots, buds and tubers of aquatic plants, aquatic insects, small fish, and crustaceans.

Predators: Eggs are eaten by Striped Skunk, American Crow, Black-billed Magpie, and Common Raven.  Young and adults are eaten by Bald Eagle, Great-horned Owl, and Northern Pike.

Nesting: Placed on floating mass of vegetation or attached to surrounding vegetation, bowl-shaped, made of reeds and lined with down. Eggs: 7-12 per clutch, greenish-olive. One brood per year.

Notes: Dives up to 30 ft. underwater to feed.
