Blue-gray Gnatcatcher

Scientific Name: Polioptila caerulea

Residency: Winters spent in southwest corner of Arizona; summers in northeast corner. Year-round through central Arizona.

Diet: Small insects and spiders.

Predators: Eggs eaten by Blue Jay Scrub Jay, squirrels and snakes. No information on predation of adults.

Nesting: Open cup made of caterpillar silk or spider webbing, covered with bark flakes. Lined with plant down, hair or grass stems and placed away from trunk on tree limbs. Eggs:  4-5 per clutch, pale blue with some dark spots.

Notes: Song usually contains mimics of other birds.
