Scientific Name: Tramea lacerata Order: Odonata Family: Libellulidae Diet: Larvae eat a carnivorous diet of anything smaller that they are. Mosquito larvae is eaten by both larvae forms and adults. Vegetation Association: Found in stagnant bodies of water; eggs can be found beneath stones under the water line. Predators: Birds. Life stages: Incomplete metamorphosis; egg, nymph, adult. Notes: The wings have characteristic black blotches which make it look like it is wearing saddlebags. The females mate once, storing sperm for fertilization. If she does mate again, the second male will remove the sperm of the first male from her body using an apparatus called a penis. They are somewhat large; about 5 cm in length.
