Scientific Name: Pomoxis nigromaculatus
Residency: Non-native to Arizona; introduced throughout the U.S.
Habitat: Prefers vegetated areas in slow-moving clear waters such as ponds, lakes, and backwaters.
Diet: Large individuals feed primarily on smaller fish, while individuals fewer than 16cm long feed on insect larvae such as mosquito larvae and planktonic crustaceans.
Breeding: Males build a nest in mud, sand, or gravel. Females most likely spawn in several nests. Males guard the eggs and young.
Status: Not endangered, and not considered a harmful species.
