Bark Scorpion

Scientific Name:  Centruroides exilicauda
Order
:  Scorpiones
Family:  Buthidae
Diet:  Crickets and cockroaches.

Vegetation Association:  This is a nocturnal climbing species and can be found upside down on trees, rock faces, or in urban areas.
Predators:   Elf Owls, lizards, snakes, grasshopper mice, desert shrews, and pallid bats prey upon scorpions.  It defends itself by stinging with several quick jabs and then retreating.
Life Stages  They give birth to live young throughout the summer.  They are not fully developed when they are born and will continue to develop for 7-21 days until their exoskeleton first molts.  Babies will crawl up their mother and hold onto her back.  If they fall off their mother may eat them.
Notes:  This scorpion has venom strong enough to kill a human being.  The last case in Arizona was in 1948.   There are 36 scorpion species native to Arizona and the Sonoran Desert.  They glow in the dark when seen under black light.  They may be found in large numbers during winter hibernation.  They like cool moist areas and may be found in closet corners or bathtubs.
