Acorn Woodpecker

Scientific Name: Melanerpes formicivorus

Residency: Year-round in eastern section of Arizona.

Diet: Eats insects, acorns, sap and fruit.

Predators: Cooper’s Hawk, owls and falcons will prey upon adults. Snakes eat eggs.

Nesting: Builds nest in a cavity or tree limb, with wood chips at the bottom. Lays 4-6 white eggs (2-3 broods per year).

Nesting Records:

Notes: Has a complicated social system whereby family groups have territories, and young woodpeckers stay with their parents to help raise young.
