Amendments to the Constitution, The
The U.S. Constitution is the world’s oldest written charter of government in continuous effect. Much of its success can be attributed to the way the Constitution has changed to meet the needs of the American people. The framers of the Constitution wisely anticipated the need to make changes to the Constitution as the world itself changed. Between 1787, when the Constitution was written, and the present time, thousands of proposed amendments have been introduced in Congress. But in that time, only 27 of those proposed amendments have been ratified. These 27 amendments tell some of the most important stories in American political, social and cultural history. They tell the story of the founding principles of the American nation, and how that nation has changed. This comprehensive series explores each amendment, its origins, its real-world applications, its history of interpretation in the nation’s courts, and its implications for the future. Combining computer graphics, original live-action video, historical artwork, and archival footage with narration and interviews, each program reveals an important chapter in the ongoing history of the U.S. Constitution. |

The end result is a persuasive argument that the Bill of Rights is a vital, living document and that all citizens share the responsibility to understand, protect, and uphold it. |

Vividly exploring situations that public officials, health care workers, and law enforcement personnel would have to confront in the event of a biological attack, a panel of experts wrestles with questions that have gone largely unanswered in the public record: Who among American’s leadership is in charge of the response? Who gets medical treatment, and who decides? Must the affected city be quarantined? Will people be prohibited from leaving? Moderated by ABC News Chief Legal Correspondent Cynthia McFadden, this Fred Friendly Seminar lays bare the central issues of homeland security and the possibility that a biological attack would turn America into a much different place overnight.

Green River Killer, The
He was a mild-mannered, church-going, bible-reading, ex-Navy man. But behind the strait-laced persona was one of the most prolific killers in history. Between 1982 and 2001, Gary Ridgway killed at least 48 women. The case had authorities so stumped that they even enlisted the help of Ted Bundy for insight into the killer's motivations. But the real break came in 2001, when DNA evidence tied the mild-mannered Ridgway to seven of the slayings.
BIOGRAPHY® probes his past and details the controversial events that followed his arrest, which ultimately led Ridgway to plead guilty to nearly 50 murders (revealing several that the authorities did not know about) in exchange for a sentence of life imprisonment. But as legal authorities detail, he may still be killed for his crimes, since at least two occurred in Oregon, which did not take part in the plea agreement.
From ''dutiful son'' to monster, follow the dark journey of Gary Ridgway. |

It’s the Law
The laws of the criminal justice system are framed first and foremost by the United States Constitution, the document that gives out government its powers, limits those powers, and ensures our rights to life, liberty, and property. While the system is designed to bring criminals to justice, it must also meet the standards of due process set forth in the Constitution. The criminal justice system, then, has two functions: protec6t the public safety and maintain the public confidence. In this program, lawyers, prosecutors, and judges explain the differences between misdemeanors, felonies, the various degrees of crimes, and the elements of a crime. Investigation procedures in the gathering of evidence and statements are discussed. Legal experts and police officers clearly illustrate such concepts as 5th Amendment rights, Miranda warning, the stop and frisk rule, search warrants, and the knock and announce rule. Probable cause and arrest procedures are also demonstrated. 30-minute video. |
