Courses that can be used to complete the AGEC are listed in the following locations:
In the printed class schedule courses are marked with their AGEC value. The table of contents also lists AGEC values of courses in each area.
The college catalog lists every course that can be used in the AGEC in the Graduation section.
Handouts available from the Advisement Center list AGEC courses offered for each semester.
Awareness areas in the AGEC may be shared or "double dipped" with the core AGEC requirements. For example HIS105, Arizona History, is a social and behavioral studies (SB) and historical awareness (H) course. You will only receive credit for the course once but it will satisfy two requirements.
To complete the AGEC in 35 credit hours you must share the Awareness Area courses with core areas; usually the (SB) and (HU) and (L) areas. It is OK to use more than 35 credits to complete the AGEC and some students might need to do so based on their interest area or major.
If you have not selected a major you should make a plan to complete the AGEC while you research career and major options. Universities suggest you choose a major by 24 credits so that you can include the proper classes in the AGEC. Every major has foundation courses and they are usually courses that can be used in the AGEC.
Compare the requirements of majors early even if you are undecided. Let's compare majors in Psychology and Communication to see what courses they each require in the AGEC.
AGEC Area
Communication major
Psychology major
(L)
Requires COM225
Any (L)
(CS)
Any (CS)
Requires PSY230
(SB)
Requires COM100
Requires PSY101
(SG)
Any (SG)
Requires PSY290AB
By looking at the comparison you can see which classes would be top choices. In the example above you can see that if you want to take an (L) course COM225, Public Speaking, is a safe choice since it can be used by both majors. Each major requires the introductory course in the discipline; COM100, Intro to Human Communication and PSY101, Intro to Psychology. Since you need 2 courses for the (SB) choosing these two courses would give you an introduction to the areas while satisfying AGEC requirements.
You can compare as many majors as you want! The more you know about what majors require the better. Knowledge will help you to make informed decisions when you select classes.
Later in the tutorial you will learn how to find the classes appropriate for your interest area like the example above .
Key Points:
Find AGEC courses using the schedule, catalog, check sheets or advisement handouts.
You must share courses between the awareness areas and core areas to complete the AGEC in 35 credits.
Learn major requirements and compare them early to choose classes wisely.
You should select a major by the time you have earned 24 credits.
