I am proud to represent the Department of Communication and Performance Arts as its department chair. I have been a faculty member at SCC since 1988. The best part of my job is the time I get to spend with my students in COM 225 Public Speaking, HUM/THE 210 Contemporary Cinema, and HUM 211 Foreign Films.
I am especially interested in topics revolving around diversity, inclusiveness and equality, and have spoken in classrooms across the Maricopa Community College District on GLBTQ issues and same-sex marriage, the topic of my 2002-03 sabbatical project. For the past eight years I have been the SCC liaison to the Anti Defamation League of Arizona, helping to coordinate their successful Many Faces of Hate film series. I have also been a mentor for Maricopa's Women's Leadership Group for the past six years, helping WLG graduates present their graduation speeches. I am a longtime member of SCC's Inclusiveness Council and a proud graduate and former mentor for the Maricopa Diversity Infusion Program. As a co-founder of the organization now known as Equality Maricopa, I helped lobby the MCCD Governing Board to include sexual orientation as a protected class in its non-discrimination statement.
I am proud of my role as co-chair (with John Avianantos) of the Dee Duggan Memorial Holiday Angel Program (better known at SCC as "Dee's Trees"), which provides for the holiday needs and desires of hundreds of economically disadvantaged children each year. Through the Dee's Trees program, John and I oversee the distribution of necessities and holiday wishes to the children of low-income SCC students and to women and children who are clients of the Chrysalis Shelter (noabuse.org).
My three personal passions are my family, including my partner, Robert, and my daughter, Eleanor, travel and culture (favorite places include Spain, Thailand and Australia), and the Arts & especially Theatre and of course, Film.
