Dr. Ashley Alward is a board certified equine internal medicine specialist and owner of Southwest Equine Hospital in Scottsdale, AZ. She grew up on an Arabian horse farm in California and spent her formative years riding/showing horses and cleaning stalls. She earned her bachelor's degree in molecular biology from John's Hopkins University in 1997. In 2001 she graduated summa cum laude from Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine. After complete veterinary school, Dr. Alward pursued post-doctorate training at Washington State University (internship in large animal medicine and surgery) and at North Carolina State University (residency in equine internal medicine). In 2005 she decided that she had had enough moving around the country, and set down roots in Arizona.
Dr. Alward's professional passions include diagnosing and treating complex medical conditions of horses and foals. Her love of discussing equine health and educating people about equine diseases and prevention has led to an adjunct faculty position in equine science at Scottsdale Community College.
During her weekends off, Dr. Alward is usually found technical rock climbing or canyoneering somewhere in Arizona, Utah or Colorado. Her vacations are spent underwater, SCUBA diving around the world and learning about marine ecosystem preservation.
