From the Grand Canyon to SCC’s GeoScene to your own backyard, Arizona is a fabulous place to study geology.
In addition to the course offerings listed below, resources for current geology students and details about geology on campus are available through our showcase site.
We offer several classes that may be right for you. Lectures and laboratories are separate courses, however, we recommend that you enroll in both during the same semester. If necessary, courses can be taken whenever your schedule permits.
GLG 101 Intro to Physical Geology lecture: rocks and minerals and plate tectonics – oh my! Learn about the materials that make up the Earth, the geological processes that shape the surface, and how the Earth works.
GLG 103 Intro to Physical Geology lab: learn the difference between minerals and rocks, and how to read topographic and geologic maps.
GLG 101 fulfills ASU’s global awareness requirement [G] and natural science requirement [SQ] when taken with GLG 103.
GLG 102 Intro to Historical Geology lecture: rocks and fossils and ancient environments – oh my! Go back in time 4.6 billion years to learn how the Earth formed and how it has changed through time.
GLG 104 Intro to Historical Geology lab: learn about fossils, rocks and rock structures, environments and geologic maps. Field trips!
GLG 102 fulfills ASU’s historical awareness requirement [H] and natural science general requirement [SG] when taken with GLG 104.
GLG 110 Geologic Disasters and the Environment lecture: volcanoes and earthquakes and landslides – oh my! Learn about geologic hazards, natural resources, and how humans interact with the Earth.
GLG 111 Geologic Disasters and the Environment lab: explore geologic hazards and how people deal with environmental issues.
GLG 110 fulfills ASU’s global awareness requirement [G] and natural science general requirement [SG] when taken with GLG 111.
GLG 121 Geology of the Grand Canyon: expand your horizons with a weekend camping and hiking field trip to the Grand Canyon. We offer this course during the Spring semester only.
GLG 230 Geology of the Southwest: experience the incredible diversity of geology in the southwest with this weekend camping and hiking field trip. We visit a different location each time the class is offered, so you can take it more than once! We offer this course during the Fall semester only.
