Yoga Certificates

The Occupational Certificate in Yoga Instruction prepares students to become qualified yoga instructors. The program provides students with a foundation in the theory, tradition and practice of yoga, knowledge of anatomy and physiology applied to yoga instruction, instructional methodology in the art and science of teaching yoga asanas, and practice teaching experience.

Since SCC is an institution of higher education, a college, it is responsible to many entities. One of those entities is the State of Arizona. This is in addition to the U.S. Department of Education, the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and the Maricopa County Community College District Governing Board. Therefore, SCC offers a Certificate of Completion (CCL), sometimes referred to as an Occupational Certificate (O.C.) in Yoga Instruction that is distinct from the Yoga Alliance registration and we feel invaluable. This is a college level certificate that states the student has met the requisite number of college credits with a grade of a "C" or higher. Students who receive the CCL in Yoga Instruction can walk in graduation and receive a diploma. If you opt for this certificate, you will not only receive the CCL in Yoga Instruction, but also a 200 hr. Yoga Alliance Approved Certificate that you can mail in to the Yoga Alliance and register with them as a yoga teacher. In addition, students who complete the 500 hr. Yoga Alliance Approved Certification also receive the CCL in Yoga Instruction. It all depends on which certification path you choose.

200 HR and 500 HR Yoga Alliance Approved Certificates

What is the Yoga Alliance?

Yoga Alliance is a non-profit organization that created industry standards on yoga teacher trainings. Schools like ours, pay an application fee to become a Yoga Alliance Approved school. Students who complete the training at these schools qualify to become a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) through Yoga Alliance after mailing in a copy of their 200 hr. and/or 500 hr. certificate plus a registration fee of $80. Instructors receive a membership card that requires annual renewal ($75 fee) and proof of continuing education every three years. In order to receive the 500 hr. membership, instructors must have taught 100 hours at the time of registration. At this time Yoga Alliance does not travel to schools and check up to make sure yoga schools and studios are performing as they stated on their application.

Before choosing a path, make an appointment with the Yoga Program Director for advisement. This will ensure that not only your goals are being met, but that the various options are clear. Thank you!
